Week 4: Wednesday, Dough Making and Noguchi Sculpture

For Wednesday, we made our own dough and looked at the work of Isamu Noguchi to note how he used interlocking planar forms in some of his sculptures. Students printed images of their favorite Noguchi sculptures and began work on their own designs back in the classroom.  Everyone was involved in the dough making process and one student even wrote down the recipe to make it again at home! Here it is below for those of you who want a quick recipe that can air dry:

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1/2 cup water (with lots of food coloring for colorful dough)

Mix flour and salt together, then and water and stir with wooden spoon. Continue to mix thoroughly with hands and knead. Add more flour if the mixture is sticky. This will keep in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks in a sealed container. Roll dough flat, create shapes, and dry on waxed paper. Drying may take several days.

FYI: Our trips to the computer lab for project resource material (concepts, artists, images to reference) has really caught on with the students. They enjoy the research and are using it to their advantage back in the classroom!
