Week 5: Wednesday, Garfield Park Conservatory Field Trip!

Hi Families, I have been an admirer and a frequent visitor to the Garfield Park Conservatory for years. It is an amazing place and every time I visit, there is something new to discover. Marta and I couldn't wait to take the children and we had the most perfect weather for our trip. It was also a perfect way to connect our "green" lessons from Monday and Tuesday: our actions must not compromise the beauty and resources that nature provides us with. Responsibility, respect and conservation are key!

The engagement our Beye Discovery students had with the Conservatory was off the charts!!!

Highlights included:
1. the intrigue of the tropical plants and those bearing fruits (we saw pineapples, bananas, oranges and limes)
2. the plants that make candy (such as chocolate, gum and cinnamon trees and the vanilla plants)
3. the fun of the children's play area with slide and moveable bee that can pollinate the flowers
4. a plant that folds it's leaves closed when you touch it
5. the extremely colorful and fragrant outdoor gardens
6. the "green thumb" area where children can plant flowers and vegetables as well as rake, hoe, dig and even build sculptures and forts with tree branches and palm fronds!

It was simply a delight!!! The children in Jocelyne's group shared in taking photos and Jayda, a 5th grader, is to be commended for the many beautiful indoor pictures you see that follow the outdoor pictures below.
