Summer Adventures Camp, Week 3: Comic Strips, Superheroes & Culture

Post Contributed by Jocelyne Adkins, Program Director/Educator

For week 3 of our Summer Adventures Camp, our morning session students focused their attention on comic strips and superheros. Highlights with Andy Coppersmith included bringing the students' comic strip characters to life in 3D. The children also invented/became superheros and created a cube with action prompts: on each roll of the cube, the students performed the action indicated.

Jocelyne and Maegan's afternoon sessions focused on culture. Inspired by the children's picture book Shi-Shi-etko by Nicola Campbell, Jocelyne's students were encouraged to think about what memories of home they would take with them if they needed to leave and couldn't return for a year. In Campbell's story, Shi-shi-etko put her memories in a memory bag given to her from her grandmother. For our project, students illustrated their own memory bags and filled them with meaningful things as a reminder of home. Students also created tryptics (a painting with 3 separate panels/divisions) that illustrate a cherished family tradition: do scroll down to see paintings depicting family pizza night, family movie night, the farmer's market, Hannukah & Shabbat!

Maegan Jenkins taught the students about kite making practices from a variety of cultures and revealed how symbolism was employed in their imagery. Students then designed their own kites and enjoyed a field trip to Scoville park to fly them! On the last day of camp, Ms. Jenkins' taught the  children how to make mobiles based on their own family traditions.

We so enjoyed our summer campers and all the fun and creativity that took place each day! Our partnership brought to life imaginative characters and places and opportunities for storytelling, performance and making wearable art. We also ventured on field trips to the OP Conservatory, Rehm Park, Scoville Park and The Oak Park Library, taking our activities into the community. Thank you to all our students for contributing their vision, talents and enthusiasm : ) We hope you will join us again next year!

Summer Adventures Camp, Week 2: The Art of Concealment

Post Contributed by Jocelyne Adkins, Program Director/Educator

Our theme for week 2 of our Summer Adventures Camp was "The Art of Concealment". Highlights from Andy Coppersmith's morning sessions included the creation of "Inspector Gadget" head-wear and an outdoor flag game inspired by semaphore flag signals.

In the afternoon with Maegan Jenkins, students learned how artist Alexander Calder used shaped symbols in his mobiles to conceal messages. Children then had the opportunity to create a symbol system to include secret messages in mobiles of their own design. Ms. Jenkin's students also learned about masquerades and designed masks to transform themselves into a hybrid of 3 different animals. These new hybrids were revealed at our masquerade event and field trip to the Oak Park Conservatory.

With Jocelyne's afternoon sessions, students enrolled in the "BD Spy Academy" and learned about spy careers and the art of disguise. They also participated in physical training exercises and learned how to create codes to communicate with other agents in secret.

This week was quite unique in approach and so much fun! We invite you to take a look below : )

Project: Secret Agent 101: Coded Bracelets & Necklaces / Teacher: Jocelyne Adkins

Students had the choice to create a necklace or bracelet that would either be identical to another agent's (to allow for easy identification of each other while on assignment and in disguise) or to use the bracelet as a way to create and send a coded message.

Children can more easily escape detection as spies because they are children! That said, young spies should keep their true identities secret and disguise themselves while on assignment. Please Note: Below is classified information: you are not allowed to share this with anyone!
