This week we introduced students to a number of different art processes. On Monday, we began with outdoor rubbings and nature prints, followed by free play with Playdoh. On Tuesday, we created linear sculptures influenced by artists such as Giacometti and David Smith. We also provided a second work station to explore drawing with "creamy" crayons and water (adding water to these crayons was a super "aha" moment and the children were extremely immersed in this activity).
Some interesting notes:
1.The rubbings turned out quite urban: Students were drawn to the bricks, concrete, ceramic tiles, chain link fence, sign posts, etc, with an occasional large leaf here and there. The results are map-like, gritty, poetic, and fantastic! We plan to display these in the hall near the office this week.
2. Playdoh was originally intended as a tactile/sensory activity for the younger
students, however none of the students could resist and all were eager to work with it. Students had fun creating textures, designs, shapes, and sculptures (creatively using the sculpting tools as part of the sculpture).
3.
Students have begun to apply concepts from previous projects to apply to new
projects in new ways, such as the use of kinetics with sculptural forms.
