Week 2, Wednesday: Nature Boxes and Collecting

1st Activity: Designing Cornell Memory Boxes Online
As a follow up to the Cornell Memory Boxes we created in class yesterday, we went to the computer lab and visited the Art Institute of Chicago’s website at

To access the interactive activity to create online Cornell boxes from home, click on the square icon “Play with Art”, then click on the next square icon featuring a butterfly and goblet. Our primary learning objective was for students to demonstrate a realistic depiction of space within the boxes they were designing. The students created some fantastic boxes, however the program would not allow us to print them out.

Students quickly discovered the mask maker activity (click the square icon with the head of an antelope) which allows students to select 5 different animals and then combines them together to create a fantasy creature. We were able to print these out and they are super fun if not a little scary!!!

2nd Activity: Designing Nature Boxes
We ventured on to the school grounds to find insects, foliage, rocks, bark, etc., to create personalized nature boxes. The finds were spectacular: A huge wasp, a rolly-polly, a blue beetle, a cicada, cicada exoskeletons, cicada holes, singing cicadas, along with leaves, bark, twigs, rocks, etc. The students were so engaged in this mission, that is was truly inspiring. Back in the classroom, students put the items together in their boxes to create some very special collections from nature.

Interesting notes:
1. One student fitted one box inside of another box to create a drawer like effect, similar to how specimens may be stored in a museum.
2. Another student used a pasta box with a glassine window to encourage viewers to peer inside through the window. This student also created a handle for transporting the box.
3. Several students followed another student’s lead and created signage for their collections as museums do.

Here are some images of the students’ beautiful finds:
