Today we role-played as animators, designing a new species
of insect for an animation in which the student’s insect becomes the lead
character. We viewed 30 minutes of the Eyewitness DVD “Insect” and reviewed the
main parts of the insects body (head, thorax, abdomen, 6 legs, often with
wings) using handouts. We also provided over 20 insect books from the Oak Park
Public library to help inspire the students. Then students went to work
designing their own insect characters.
Interesting notes:
1. Students created these insects either in their
sketchbooks or on loose paper and named them according to specific attributes.
2. One student focused on a special defense mechanism in
which complex designs could shoot from the insect to mesmerize and divert threatening
predators.
3. A paper airplane book, intended for week 3, was accidentally mixed in
with the insect books. Of course for some students this trumped making insects
and creating airplanes became the rage… we went with it!!!
