We focused on the work of Charlie Harper with his bold
colors, flat designs and visual textures created by the use of Harper’s
repeating design elements. We discussed the difference between geometric and
organic shapes and demonstrated how to repeat a shape or shapes from nature to
create a more complex design. Students could work more detail into the shapes
if they chose or leave them as silhouettes.
Interesting Notes:
1. We are fairly certain that all students opted for detail
(again another example of how the teachers appreciate flat shapes and color
fields due to their bold and graphic nature, whereas the students prefer to
provide more visual information.
2. Despite occasional hesitation beginning an activity, students
find that they are surprising themselves at what they can accomplish (always a
joy for teachers)!
3. Following the activity, some students enjoyed working with geometric tiles
to create new shapes and designs.
