Post Contributed by Jocelyne Adkins, Program Director/Educator
During the week of Sept. 17th through the 21st, we focused our attention on sculpture. It seemed quite appropriate to begin with a field trip to the Oak Park Sculpture Walk at Forest Ave and Lake Street. We were particularly excited to view "Hawk and Dove" by local artist Margo MacMahon, in anticipation of her visit with us on Sept. 24th, to teach us about additive sculpture. Students also experienced the work of about 10 other artists who use a variety of materials, forms, and methods to create their sculptures.

Students were asked to reflect on the sculptures' materials, shapes and forms and in relation to each sculpture's current location. We were pleased that the children were extremely perceptive and open about what sculpture can be. "Finish" was a particular favorite and before the students were informed of the title of the work, they speculated about its form. Some thought it suggested a dancer, others a bird, or a person jumping. They enjoyed striking a pose to mimic the implied movement suggested by the work. When made aware of the title, the students "got it" immediately : )

During the sculpture walk, students also impressed us with their
artistic creations along the way, making designs with fallen leaves and
drawing on the side walk with stone. Oliver, a 4th grader, took many of
the photos you see in this post. We extend a special thank you to Oliver for
carefully documenting our trip! Thank you!!!
