Beye's Native Garden has been the focus of our activities this week. Today we visited the garden again to draw plants from observation, using pencil lines pressed into sheets of foam, to later make an edition of relief prints. We were very impressed with the children's dedicated efforts to draw directly from nature. Each drawing was labeled on the back with the name of the native plant, so students can build a stronger connection to the plants growing in the garden.

When we returned inside, we began the printing process, however we will
need another session (or 2) to complete all of the prints. Stay tuned
for our future post to see how these carefully studied drawings are
transformed into colorful relief prints!

Elise, ready for printing! |
Tomorrow, we will take a short nature walk around Beye School do a little data collection. We are curious to see how many gardens we find, and of these gardens, how many contain native plants. That way, we can make an informed decision about whether or not our area contains an adequate number of natives to support a beneficial population of bees and butterflies. Hopefully, our students will be inspired to plant some natives with families in their neighborhoods too!
