For our collage projects, we have been saving garment tags, tea bag packaging, small note cards and envelopes, cardboard and paper trimmings from other projects, and interesting items such as colorful net produce bags. For this particular project, these items were collaged onto cardboard then covered with aluminum foil and rubbed by hand to create a low relief that reveals the shapes beneath the foil.
Foil as a medium is very enticing and Sydney discovered the wonderful textures she could create by dragging a plastic knife and other items along it's surface. Hayden worked with focus to glue lots of yarn to his surface before
covering it with foil and then scratching into it to create more
textural contrast. He and other students also added more collaged items on top of the foil to increase the impact of the overall design (kudos!) Dexter and Govanni skipped the collage and went straight to sculpting the aluminum foil into 3-D forms, creating characters, wearable art and miniatures like the spoon shown in the photos below. Daysha's collage was so beautiful in color, that we both agreed the aluminum foil should be omitted. A couple students chose to work on independent projects and their constructions/inventions are also included below. Nice work Beye Discovery!
