Experimental Painting

Post Contributed by Ally Bernstein, Assistant Teacher

Hi Families!

On our first day back from winter break, Beye Discovery students warmed up with some active, experimental painting. We used tempera paints, white copy paper, and a wide variety of tools, including paint brushes, bubble wrap, clay sculpting tools, foam stamps, foam rollers and tooth brushes (for paint use only, of course!). Ms. Adkins demonstrated possible techniques, such as using tooth brushes to speckle paint, foam letters to create abstract stamped designs or marks, and clay tools to "draw" into layers of paint.

Students were also encouraged to experiment and to develop techniques of their own. They found that bristled tooth brushes were a fun way to create texture when used to apply paint directly. Foam rollers efficiently covered a large area of the paper and students created beautiful blends and fades when they used two or more colors.

Bubble wrap covered in paint left a fascinating imprint when stamped on to the paper. Using hard and dry brushes, students made bristly, scratchy marks on the page. And a few students delighted in splattering, dripping and layering the paint.

At the end of the afternoon, pages of standard copy paper were transformed into bright hues, random patterns, and textures ~ full of moments that beckon the eye! To see these paintings in person, please visit our display outside the main office, on the west wall throughout the month of February.
