Dale Chihuly Inspired Abstractions

Post Contributed by Jocelyne Adkins

On our 2nd day of school, we opted to avoid the sweltering heat and made our own fun indoors. After viewing the work of glass artist Dale Chihuly (who creates incredible sculptural forms and installations that resemble sea life, plant life, and more), we set to work making abstracted designs with glue and food dye to capture the transparency and brilliant color of glass using more child-friendly materials.

Chuhily inspired designs with glue and food coloring

One approach to this project is to pour glue directly onto a plastic film (such as binder inserts/dividers) and to add 2 drops of food dye that can be manipulated with a toothpick to create fantastic swirling designs. Another approach that can add even more dimension to the work is to draw designs with washable marker on circles of white cardstock. The cardstock is then set into a plastic lid, the glue is added next, and then the food coloring (to manipulate as in the example above).

This is the type of process that can reveal more and lend itself to additional opportunities with each attempt. The process is magical and uncertain: the dye continues to spread and bleed as the glue dries and it is often a surprise to see the finished work. We loved the results ~ please stop by to view our display on the 2nd floor. It will be worth the trip to see them in person : )
