Week 6: Tuesday, Expressionistic Painting!

We had soooo much fun with these paintings that I forgot to stop and photograph the first group of students at work! Children are so inherently expressive with paint. It is truly inspiring and I can't help but think of Picasso who stated that "Every child is an artist - the problem is how to remain an artist once you grow up". Being in the classroom today was a great reminder of how curiosity and exploration can fuel the artist in us all!

Some interesting notes:
  • Students used a variety of tools to create interesting designs and textures in their paintings. Forks, bottle caps, patterned rollers, cotton swabs and tooth brushes all made their debut in the students' work today.
  • Originally, the paintings were to be cut up "Eric Carle style" for collages. However, these paintings turned out to be such terrific expressionist artworks, that we didn't push our students to cut them up: for their collages, we supplemented with colorful re-use paper from a variety of sources, as well as solid construction paper & patterned scrap-booking paper instead.
