Artist and educator Jenny Raia visited Beye Discovery to teach us about radial symmetry. Ms. Raia shared segments from a video by Charles and Ray Eames as an introduction to this topic. She also read a beautiful children's book by Salina Yoon, titled
"Kaleidoscope", to show that kaleidoscope designs are radial
. The children especially enjoyed looking through the kaleidoscopes that Ms. Raia brought : )
For the project, Ms. Raia demonstrated how to create a radial design, that has a kaleidoscope effect. After folding the paper and drawing lines to delineated the folded areas, students used a variety of shiny re-purposed packaging materials to create a collaged radial design. The finished work is really dazzling ~ do have a look below!
