Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Inspirations

The National Museum of Mexican Art hosted its annual exhibit "Dia de Los Muertos" from Sept. 10th through Dec. 11th. It was an incredible show: extremely personal for some artists and yet universal in the emotions that connect us to loved ones who have passed on. I was glad to have visited on Nov. 1st and felt very inspired. When I arrived at Beye Discovery and removed the sugar skull to share with the class, it was an immediate attention grabber. Even though it would have been wonderful to create authentic sugar skulls with BD, it is a tempermental process impacted by humidity and there are no guarantees that there will be a suitable outcome. I decided to use model magic as a substitute with sequins.  I am pleased to say this was a truly captivating activity for the students that produced super results!

To prepare the students in regard to design, we discussed achieving balance through color and symmetry; encouraged the development of a motif; and demonstrated how to create interesting impressions using bottle caps and other items. Some of the students decided to make the bottle caps part of the work, rather than just using them to create impressions and this worked quite well too! Enjoy the photos below!
